Forum on the Reuse of Treated Water: Between Perspectives and Reality

On April 22, 2024, the Institute of Earth and Universe organized a conference at the large lecture hall of Batna 2 University on the topic of “Reusing Treated Water: Between Prospects and Reality.” The event was attended by the Wali (Governor) of Batna, the Rector of Batna 2 University, environmental experts, and individuals concerned with preserving water resources.

Amid increasing pressure on freshwater resources worldwide, reusing treated water is seen as an important option to meet water needs. However, this technology faces several challenges, including cultural reservations and the techniques used. Researchers emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the benefits of reusing treated water for agricultural and industrial purposes, reducing water pollution, and promoting environmental sustainability. However, success in this field requires effective strategies, including appropriate legislation and advanced water treatment technologies.

The Wali affirmed the local government’s commitment to supporting projects for reusing treated water and providing the necessary infrastructure to implement these projects effectively. He also called for cooperation between the public and private sectors to achieve sustainable development goals and ensure access to clean water for all.

On this occasion, four agreements were signed between Batna 2 University and the Higher School of Agriculture of Harrach, the National Office for Sanitation of the Bâa region, the Algeria-Somalia Hydrological Basin Agency, and the Quality Control and Anti-Fraud Laboratory of Batna. These agreements aim to enhance scientific research and develop local communities. They reflect the university and its partners’ commitment to promoting education and scientific research in the fields of environmental sciences, water, and sanitation through knowledge exchange, seminars, and joint workshops.

The day concluded with a ceremony honoring four professors from the Faculty of Arts and Foreign Languages, who contributed to translation during the visit of the Vietnamese delegation to Batna in August of the previous year.
